Plate Burning Department: Policies and Procedures
Receiving Inventory
1. Receive Material from all inventory trucks and store in proper location.
2. Verify that the heat number and grade match the heat number and grade on the paperwork (and MTR.)
3. Measure plate. Document the actual size (thickness, length and width) on the paperwork.
4. The Burning Manager or Assistant Burning Manager will record information in the inventory database. They will scan the MTRs in
Adobe (.pdf) format and save the scanned images by Plate Number in the MTR folder on the main hard drive.
5. The Burning Manager will verify that material grade, thickness and plate number match test reports and inventory database, then
sign and date paperwork.
Processing Material
1. Always pull the plate from inventory that is assigned by the department programmer.
2. Always double check the plate thickness using a tape measure or calipers.
3. Read the Job Traveler before programming or cutting. Look at the part number, job description and drawing, if attached. Make sure you
are cutting the correct thickness, grade and profile.
4. Before cutting a nest, look at the cut list to make sure the part sizes on the list match the sizes on the travelers. If not, notify
the department manager before cutting.
5. Always check to make sure the torch is square to the material and take care to insure cutting tips are clean.
6. When cutting a nest, check the first part to make sure that the dimensions are correct before completing the remainder of the nest.
7. After completing the burns, verify that parts are the correct sizes and square.
8. Document plate numbers on job travelers for tracking purposes.
9. While unloading parts from burning tables, inspect burn quality.
If any bad burns exist, management should review to determine if parts are to be re-burned or can be repaired.
10. Write job number and customer name on each part.
11. Mark plate numbers clearly on remaining inventory drops in order to maintain proper MTR paper trail.
12. Document on inventory sheet the plate numbers and sizes of the material to be returned to inventory.
