Grinding Department: Policies and Procedures
Each Grinding Machine Operator is responsible for Initial Quality Assurance relative to dimensions,
tolerances and surface finishes to comply with our Documented Workmanship Standards.
1. At the start of each shift, follow the Maintenance schedule for your machine.
A. Check all oil levels.
B. Grease all appropriate fittings.
C. Check dresser height.
D. Inform Manager of any repairs and/or spare parts needed.
E. Check the condition of the chuck and run a hone over it to remove any burrs.
2. All employees must read Job Travelers (WIP documentation) prior to starting any job. The entire traveler should be read to verify
size of job (thickness, width, and length), and whether all prior steps have been completed correctly. Do not start grinding any job
that does not match the size on the traveler or that has poor burn quality without prior Manager approval.
3. When a traveler designates to grind only one side, be sure the proper side is noted on the traveler or drawing. If you are NOT sure
which side to grind, stop and ask your Manager.
4. Follow the grinding schedule provided by the Grinding Manager.
5. Always check the bottom of lift magnets before picking up ground parts. Hone magnets when necessary.
Standard Grinding Information:
1. f & p – flat & parallel
2. f & p & s – flat & parallel & square
3. Standard grinding tolerance (unless noted) = ± .005”
4. Standard flatness within .003” per foot of length
5. Surface Finish Requirements:
A. Standard Blanchard Grind – 63RMS
B. Standard finish for Surface Grinders – 32RMS (A better finish is achievable, if required.)
6. SR – Stress Relieve AN – Anneal
Stress Relieve or anneal is usually done to help achieve a better flatness and to improve machining qualities.
